Understanding recessive genes

Overview

Recessive conditions are common sources of confusion because a dog can look completely normal while still carrying a gene that matters. When two carriers are paired, affected puppies may result. That is why test interpretation and mate selection matter.

Key concepts

  • Clear: no detected copy of the tested variant
  • Carrier: one copy present, usually unaffected for recessive conditions
  • Affected: two copies present for the tested recessive condition

Breeder decisions

Responsible breeders avoid risky pairings and keep records. They do not need to panic and torch valuable genetics every time a carrier appears.

Practical note

The goal is risk management with integrity, not performative purity.
