Understanding genetic health testing

Overview

Genetic health testing can be extremely useful, but only when breeders understand what is being tested, how relevant it is to the breed, and what the result actually means. Good programs use testing as one part of a broader health and breeding strategy.

What to review

  • Breed relevance of the test
  • Whether the condition is dominant, recessive, or otherwise inherited
  • How the result affects pairing choices
  • Whether additional screening or consultation is needed

Common mistake

The biggest mistake is treating a pile of test PDFs like a personality trait. Testing matters because it informs action, not because it looks impressive in a folder.

Practical note

Use the right tests, interpret them correctly, and keep your records honest.
