How to select breeding dogs

Overview

Good breeding selections are deliberate. The goal is to choose dogs that strengthen the program and protect the breed rather than just producing puppies that sell easily. Strong selections come from balancing health, temperament, structure, purpose, and pedigree depth.

Selection criteria

  • Breed-appropriate health testing
  • Stable, appropriate temperament
  • Sound structure and movement
  • Family consistency and pedigree value
  • Fit with the breeder’s long-term goals

Practical note

Do not select breeding dogs like you are shopping for sneaker colorways. Trend-chasing ages badly.
